ChemUnity alters trading model

Vienna, Austria - July, 2001 - ChemUnity is the latest dotcom to abandon its original trading site model. From July, the Netherlands-based company will launch its sourcing portal, designed to automate companies' buying processes through a web-browser system.

Herman Rijks of ChemUnity told ECN at the FECC congress in Vienna that the company's existing site, which puts buyers and sellers in touch through an automated bidding system, will be continued, but not expanded. It was not attracting sufficient trades to finance the operation, even with 600 registered users and 27 products.

In future, ChemUnity will rent its sourcing portal software to purchasers at €300/month ($;258.6/month). Through this, companies will be able to enter requests for purchases to specified suppliers and specified products. These will be e-mailed directly to the suppliers without the intervention of ChemUnity.

ChemUnity had earlier this year received a further € 8 million in financing from the UK's 3i. This, says Rijks, is enough to finance ChemUnity through to the middle of next year. Already, he says, there has been a lot of interest in the sourcing portal software and concept, which was developed in- house and not through ChemUnity's original IT partner CSC.
