Arnhem, The Netherlands - July, 2000 - After launching with various solvents in May ChemUnity.com, the European online sourcing platform, has now activated several inorganic products. Recently it hosted its first transaction in caustic soda, won by Norsk Hydro, the Norwegian multinational. "We are very pleased with the service, the design and the way the system works", says Knut Morkestrand of Norsk Hydro.
To date over 60% of the region's non-captive caustic soda production capacity has registered with ChemUnity.com while several other suppliers are expected to sign up once the summer holidays is over.
"The reluctance of a few months ago of suppliers to sign up has disappeared" indicates Herman Rijks, ChemUnity's CEO. "Buyers are using ChemUnity as a communication tool just like a fax or a phone to indicate their purchase needs, so in a way not registering is like turning off the fax."
How ChemUnity.com works:
Approved buyers can place inquiries, defining the product, grade, concentration and packaging they require and when and where to deliver. ChemUnity.com forwards those inquiries to all the suppliers of that specific product in efficient daily batches. Within a day a selection is made and if the best offer is within the range indicated by the buyer, the transaction - including credit insurance - is confirmed. Buyers can be sure to get an offer within a day at the best price available in the market and suppliers are able to see and respond to all inquiries reviewing them just once a day, while knowing that all payments are guaranteed.
ChemUnity.com was formed late 1999 by a group of entrepreneurs with financial backing from Gilde and Optimix and has established partnerships with CSC (software) Compaq (hardware), NCM/Swiss Re (credit insurance) and Egon Zehnder (human resources).
